Emerging from the post-punk band Sad Lovers & Giants, The Snake Corps developed a sound that married dark, melodic atmospheres with sharp guitar lines and emotionally resonant vocals. The Snake Corps debuted with 1985's gothic Flesh on Flesh. Second album, Smother Earth, appeared in 1990, preceded by the single ""Calling You"" and it's popular B-side ""This Is Seagull..."" Guitarist Tristan Garel-Funk notes, ""Flesh on Flesh was a reaction against what Sad Lovers & Giants had become. A sort of howl of rage. Smother Earth was more like a return to base."" Singer Marc Lewis states, ""At the time we felt we'd made our strongest album, and I still think it represents the band at it's creative peak. Listening back now, what strikes me most is how well it has aged. Because we weren't afraid to explore different ideas instead of repeating the same formula, the album still feels fresh.
